Product Summary of Zirconia (Stabilised either with Magnesia or Yttria)
This much studied ceramic is only useful in its stabilised state as unstabilised material has a tendency to crack due to phase changes induced by changes of temperature. However, zirconia partially stabilised with either magnesia or yttria has excellent mechanical properties at high temperatures and is relatively inert to hostile environments. The ability to retain high strength at elevated temperatures and resist a range of molten metals makes it ideal for use as a crucible material. One unusual characteristic of zirconia is that at high temperatures it becomes electrically conductive, hence its use as heating elements.
Characteristics of Zirconia include:
- High Strength
- Good impact strength
- Good thermal shock resistance
- Superb resistance to molten metals
- Good wear resistance
